Zenzile Miriam Makeba (March 4, 1932 – November 9, 2008) was a South African singer, composer, actor, and civil rights activist. She was a vocal opponent of apartheid and white minority rule in South Africa, and was associated with musical genres such as Afropop, jazz, and world music.
Makeba, who was born in Johannesburg to Swazi and Xhosa parents, was compelled to work as a youngster when her father died. At the age of 17, she had a brief and apparently brutal first marriage, gave birth to her lone child in 1950, and survived breast cancer.
Qongqothwane is a traditional Xhosa song from South Africa. It is sung at weddings to bring luck. It is mostly known as The Click Song in the Western world. The Xhosa word literally translates to “knock-knock beetle,” a common term for many kinds of darkling beetles that create a characteristic banging sound by tapping their abdomens on the ground. The Xhosa believe that these bugs bring good luck and rain.
